Storm Score Twice in Third to Down Chicago

Savin scores first USHL goal for Steel

KEARNEY, NE — For the third consecutive game, the Steel fell behind 2-0 before tying the game, but the Tri-City Storm (9-3-0-0, 18 pts.) scored twice in the third period to top Chicago (5-3-1-1, 12 pts.) 4-2 at Viaero Center Friday night.

Arseni Savin scored his first USHL goal in the second period, and Dallas Vieau scored his third goal. Alex Wang stopped 29 of 32 shots in the loss.

The Steel have dropped each of its first three road games and has allowed at least four goals and been limited to two or fewer in each loss.

Chicago went shorthanded just three minutes into the contest, giving Tri-City's high-powered offense a chance to start the scoring, but the Steel penalty kill was stout and shut down the home team's advantage.

Tri-City's JP Messuri had the best chance to break the scoreless tie late in the first period on a one-timer from the slot, but Wang reacted in a flash, shooting out his right pad to stonewall Messuri and keep the Storm off the board.

Shots favored the Storm 10-7 after the first 20 minutes.

Both teams settled in during the middle period that saw Tri-City score back-to-back goals to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Matthew Krayer opened the scoring at 1:51 after ripping a one-timer off a feed from Jackson Smith in the low slot.

Just over one minute later, Messuri made a great play to stick-lift a Steel defender and open a shot opportunity and fired past Wang to give the Storm a 2-0 lead.

Chicago didn't let the deficit deter them and answered just 44 seconds later when Savin received a pass just outside the faceoff circles from Leland Dulac. In one motion, Savin stickhandled and faked a shot before snapping a wrist shot through traffic to make it 2-1.

The Steel knotted the game at 2-2 ten minutes later when Vieau skated around defenders to the right circle and lofted a backhand shot over Storm goaltender Quinn Beumer to break his 73-minute shutout streak.

Tri-City held a 20-13 shots lead going into the third frame.

The Storm took the lead for good at 3:19 of the third period when Messuri drew in defenders near the left half-wall and spun a pass to an open Dominik Domonkos in the slot who made it 3-2.

The Steel survived a brief 5-on-3 Storm power play that included a timely breakaway stop by Wang on Domonkos. Chicago broke out following the big save and drew a Tri-City penalty but couldn't convert on their lone power play of the night.

Chicago took its timeout with 2:11 left and pulled Wang for an extra attacker, but Dylan Krayer scored on the empty net.

The Steel will take on Tri-City to finish the weekend on Saturday, Oct. 31. Chicago will return to USG Arena on Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 for a two-game series against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Saturday's matchup will feature the 7th Annual Turtle Races courtesy of Big Joe's 2 & 6 Pub.
