Phantoms Outlast Chicago in 3-2 Shootout Win

Millett and Campbell score as Steel earn point in fifth straight home game

CHICAGO, IL — Chicago erased a two-goal deficit with consecutive goals to force overtime and eventually a shootout, but the Youngstown Phantoms (4-6-1-0, 9 pts.) scored twice in the shootout to down the Steel (5-2-1-1, 12 pts.) 3-2 at USG Arena Saturday night.

Jason Millett scored a power play goal for his fourth tally of the season, and MJ Campbell scored his team-leading fifth goal. Alex Wang stopped 23 of 25 shots in defeat.

The Steel earned three of four possible points on the weekend and have recorded a standings point in all five of its home games and all seven games played at USG Arena including the USHL Fall Classic.

A penalty-filled Friday carried into Saturday as the Steel got two power play chances in the first period.

Chicago went to its first advantage at 8:34 and applied heavy pressure but couldn't break the seal.

After surviving the Steel blitz, Youngstown's Nikita Kotsov fired a pass through Steel defenders to spring Alexander Svitov on a breakaway.  Svitov fired through the right arm of Wang to make it 1-0 Phantoms.

The Steel went to their second power play just under one minute after the Youngstown goal, but the Phantoms were again resilient on the kill and maintained their one-goal lead.

Chicago was hit with a major penalty with three minutes remaining in the opening frame after Trevor Shorter was issued a game misconduct, giving Youngstown its first power play of the game.

The Steel blanked Youngstown on the first half of the power play and led in shots 9-8 after the first period.

It took just nine seconds into the second period for the Phantoms to capitalize on their power play when Malachi McKinnon fired past Wang to make it 2-0.

Chicago killed off the remaining two minutes to stay within two.

After Youngstown's power play expired, Chicago had its third chance of the game on the advantage.

The Phantoms nearly scored their first shorthanded goal of the season when McKinnon got a breakaway after a Steel point shot was blocked. McKinnon went to deke and tuck the puck around Wang's left pad, but it tumbled and rolled into the corner.

On the ensuing sequence, Leland Dulac released a point shot that was deflected on goal by Cade Strom and stopped by the toe of Phantoms goaltender Owen Lepak.

The Steel went to a five-minute advantage of their own after a Phantoms slew foot penalty and struck with seconds to spare when Millett ripped a shot from the right circle to make it 2-1.

Just 38 seconds later, Campbell pounced on a loose puck in the blue paint to tie the game at 2-2.

Chicago led 17-12 in shots heading to the third frame.

The Steel had a late power play in the third period but failed to score, and with time winding down, a double-minor was called on Chicago, giving the Phantoms a 4-on-3 advantage in the extra frame.

The Steel penalty kill was again strong in overtime, staving off Youngstown for nearly four minutes to force a shootout.

After Leland Dulac scored in the first round for Chicago, Jesse Orlowsky scored in round two for the Phantoms, and Nikita Koltsov scored in the fourth round to give Youngstown the win.

Chicago will travel to Nebraska to take on the Tri-City Storm on Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31.
