Steel Suffer Road Loss to Capitols

Madison scores six straight goals to top Chicago

MIDDLETON, WI — A six-goal scoring onslaught for the Capitols was too much for the Steel to overcome as Chicago (4-2-1-0, 9 pts.) fell to Madison (3-3-1-0, 7 pts.) 6-2 at Bob Suter's LEGACY20 Arena Saturday night.

Cole Bumgarner broke the shutout bid with his fourth goal late in the third period, and Nolan Shorter scored his second goal of the season later in the period.

Alex Wang stopped 18 shots before Chase Pastor came in for his first USHL action in the third period and stopped four shots.

The Steel have allowed at least five goals in their two road matchups, both losses.

Madison broke open the scoring at 5:51 of the first period on a broken play when a loose puck slid to Braden Waller who wristed a shot that bounced off Wang and in to give the Capitols a 1-0 lead.

MJ Campbell had a pair of strong chances, the best for the Steel in the opening period, but both were turned aside by Madison goaltender Elliot Lennon.

With just over five minutes remaining in the period, Will Dosan deflected a shot on goal and had an open net on the rebound, but Wang sprawled out and kept the puck from crossing the line.

Madison went to the game's first power play with under five minutes left, but the Steel's strong penalty kill unit came through to blank the Capitols.

Chicago outshot Madison 7-4 in the first 20 minutes.

The Steel dominated the opening stages of the second period with a handful of looks in the offensive zone but couldn't find the equalizer.

The Capitols scored their first goal of the second period when a Steel giveaway at the Madison blue line sprung Rio Treharne on a two-on-one that ended with Waller firing past Wang for his second goal that made it 2-0.

Shortly after, Campbell boxed out a defender and dropped a pass for Cole Bumgarner, but Madison defenders converged to disrupt the shot attempt and deflect it wide.

With 4:55 left in the period, a shot bounced into the air outside of the blue paint, and Caleb Pittsley whacked the puck into the back of the net to extend Madison's lead to 3-0.

Madison was penalized after the goal, sending Chicago to its first power play of the night, but the Steel couldn't break through.

A major penalty on Cole Peters gave Madison a five-minute power play.

On the first faceoff of the penalty kill, Patrick Tolan sped around a defender for a shorthanded breakaway but was shut down by Lennon.

A fluky goal on the advantage made it 4-0 Madison after a shot was turned away by Wang, but Nolen Geerdes won the scramble around the crease and sent the puck trickling under the pads of the Steel goaltender.

Madison scored twice in a span of 1:08 early in the third period, starting with Eero Butella tallying his second goal. Pittsley scored his second of the game to cap off Madison's scoring.

Chicago broke Lennon's bid for a shutout at 7:16 when Bumgarner ripped a shot from outside the left faceoff circle to make it 6-1.

Shorter added the final Steel tally at 14:13 after shoveling a rebound past Lennon from the slot.
