Steel Take Three-Point Weekend Into Road Set at Tri-City

Chicago faces Storm for first lengthy road trip of season

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Fresh off a three-point weekend on home ice which included a thrilling comeback victory, the Chicago Steel head west for a Halloween weekend showdown against the Tri-City Storm, with two games on tap, Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:05 pm and Saturday, Oct. 31 at 6:05 pm.

The Steel (5-2-1-1, 12 pts.) collected three of four possible standings points against the Youngstown Phantoms on Oct. 23 and 24 with a dramatic 7-6 overtime victory Friday before earning a point in a 3-2 shootout loss Saturday.

Friday's victory featured Chicago's largest comeback of the season. Trailing 6-3 entering the third period, the Steel erupted for three unanswered goals to force overtime before
Jayden Kurtz scored the game-winner just 56 seconds into the extra frame. The goal gave Chicago its third consecutive home victory.

Chicago outshot Youngstown 20-3 in the third period, its highest single-period shot total this season, and scored at least five goals for the third consecutive home game.

The Steel found themselves in another early hole Saturday, falling behind 2-0 before scoring twice in a span of 38 seconds during the second period to even the contest.
Jason Millett got Chicago on the board and MJ Campbell tied the game. Neither team broke through in the third period or overtime, and Youngstown converted twice in the shootout to claim the extra point.

Campbell continues to be a driving force behind Chicago's offense, scoring three goals across the two games to bring his season total to a team-leading five. The 16-year-old forward scored twice Friday, including the game-tying goal on a 5-on-3 power play late in the third period before finding the back of the net again Saturday. Campbell has scored a point in four consecutive games (4G-1A) and recorded his second multi-goal performance of the season Friday. He ranks fourth among USHL rookies in points (8) and is third in goals.

Millett continued a recent scoring surge with a power play goal Saturday, kickstarting Chicago's second period to erase the two-goal deficit. He has scored three goals over his last five games after going scoreless through the first four contests of the season.

Rookie defenseman
Leland Dulac has begun to heat up after getting on the scoresheet three times last weekend. The California native recorded his first USHL goal and added an assist on Friday before potting an assist Saturday. He has recorded a point in three of the last four games (1G-4A) and is the only USHL rookie to have scored in a shootout. He boasts the third-best plus-minus rating (+5) among league rookies.

The Steel have dropped both of their road games this season and have been outscored 11-2. They have not scored on the power play (0-for-4) and have allowed opponents to score three power play goals on nine opportunities.

Tri-City (8-3-0-0, 16 pts.) has won six of its last seven games, most recently defeating the Omaha Lancers 3-0 on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Storm opened the scoring in the first period before adding two goals in the final frame to secure their eighth victory of the season. The Storm were scheduled to face Sioux City on Oct. 18 but the game was postponed.

Through 11 games, Tri-City has scored 51 goals, building on a franchise-record 48 goals through its first ten contests. The Storm needed just ten games to reach a mark that took 20 games to achieve last season.

Aleksandr Sokolov enters the weekend with nine goals and 12 points in 11 games. His nine goals are tied for second-most in the USHL. He opened the season with a point in six of seven games (8G-2A) and has tallied a point in consecutive outings (1G-1A).

Jackson Smith leads the Storm with 13 points (3G-10A). The Chicago native ranks second among USHL rookies in scoring and leads all first-year players with ten assists. He has recorded five power-play points this season, the third-most among league rookies.

Both Sokolov and Smith were included on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary Players to Watch List for the 2027 NHL Draft.

Goaltender Quinn Beumer delivered a standout performance in Tri-City's victory last weekend, stopping all 34 shots he faced against Omaha to earn his first shutout of the season. He came one save shy of his career-high 35 saves, set against the Lancers on Oct. 16. Beumer ranks tied for second among league goaltenders with four victories and has the third-best goals against average at 2.00. His .938 save percentage is second-best, and he is one of four goaltenders who have recorded two or more shutouts this season.

The Steel are 29-24-5-3 all-time against Tri-City and 12-12-2-1 on the road. This weekend's games are the only scheduled games between the two clubs this season. The Storm defeated Chicago in two matchups last season, both one-goal victories for Tri-City.

The Steel will return to USG Arena on Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 for a two-game series against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Saturday's matchup will feature the USG Arena debut of Turtle Races courtesy of Big Joe's 2 & 6 Pub.
