STEEL SIGN LUKAS SAWCHYN TO TENDER AGREEMENT

Highly skilled center will join Chicago for 2023-2024 season

GENEVA, ILLINOIS — The Chicago Steel announced Monday the signing of forward Lukas Sawchyn of Shattuck St. Mary's Prep to a USHL tender agreement for the 2023-2024 season.

A highly skilled center, Sawchyn totaled 78 points (28G, 50A) in 57 games played for the Shattuck St. Mary's 16U AAA team during the 2022-2023 season.

"We're thrilled to sign Lukas to a tender," said Steel Head Coach and General Manager Mike Garman.  "He's a very talented hockey player who consistently generates great scoring chances and has a knack for scoring goals.  Not only is he an offensive talent, but Sawchyn plays a 200-foot game and is highly competitive all over the rink.

"In addition to being a great hockey player, Lukas is passionate about getting better and we're grateful he's entrusted the Steel with the next stage of his development. He has a very professional approach to the game and we can't wait to see him in a Steel jersey this fall."

Last season, the Grande Prairie, Alberta native recorded 85 points (35G, 50A) in 52 games while playing with Shattuck St. Mary's 14U AAA team.

"I am very honored and excited to continue my development with the Chicago Steel." said Sawchyn. "This is an awesome opportunity with a great organization. They have an amazing coaching staff, a great team culture, and fantastic support system.

"They have an incredible track record of player development and team success. I can't wait to get started and contribute at the highest level I can!"

Now in its 12th year, the USHL tender process allows teams to sign up to two 2007 birth year players prior to the 2023 USHL Phase I Draft, which is scheduled to take place in May.

Sawchyn is the eighth player to be tendered by Chicago after the team signed forward Robert Mastrosimone in 2017, defenseman Ryan Ufko in 2019, defenseman Jake Livanavage and forward Adam Fantilli in 2020, forward Jayden Perron in 2021, and forwards Macklin Celebrini and Michael Hage in 2022.

Sawchyn's signing will take the place of Chicago's first-round pick in the 2023 USHL Phase I Draft. Should the Steel choose to tender a second player, that signing would take the place of a second-round selection in the USHL Phase I Draft. Tendered players are required to play in 55 percent of a team's games during the regular season, notwithstanding injury, illness or suspension.

The Steel will begin the 2023 Clark Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, hosting a best-of-three series against #4 Green Bay or #5 Dubuque that will begin either Friday, April 28 or Saturday, April 29 at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

Single-game playoff tickets are on sale now.
