Sigurdson Earns USHL Goaltender of the Week Honors

Rookie netminder picked up victory in first USHL start

GENEVA, ILLINOIS — Chicago Steel goaltender Quentin Sigurdson has been named USHL Goaltender of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Sigurdson allowed just one goal on 38 shots in Chicago's 3-1 win over the Madison Capitols on Feb. 18. Sigurdson stopped all 13 first-period shots and shut the door in the third period with 14 saves to lift the Steel to their second consecutive win.

The rookie goaltender was acquired by the Steel in a trade with the Odessa Jackalopes of the North American hockey league (NAHL) on Feb. 6, and made his debut Sunday to cap off Chicago's biggest homestand of the regular season.

"What most attracted us to Quentin was his balance and ability to read the game," said Steel Assistant Coach Karel Popper. "His work ethic and engagement in his pursuit of his development has been impressive; he's always asking questions and trying to find ways to improve on a daily basis.  As we all know, this league is very difficult on goalies. We are thrilled that Q was able to find success in his first start."

Committed to Northeastern University, Sigurdson was one of the top goaltenders in the NAHL with the Jackalopes this season. In 36 games, Sigurdson posted a .923 save percentage and a 2.56 goals against average with a 15-14-3-1 record. The Minnesota native posted four shutouts, which still stands as the second-most in the NAHL this year.

Before playing in the NAHL, Sigurdson played in the NAHL's partner league, the NA3HL, with the Granite City Lumberjacks in the 2021-22 season. Sigurdson played 19 games that season, and posted a sparkling 1.48 GAA and a .925 save percentage along with five shutouts. Sigurdson finished the season with a nearly perfect record of 18-1-0-0. Sigurdson continued to thrive in the playoffs with Granite City, playing in nine playoff games and posting a 1.67 GAA and a .936 save percentage and two shutouts. Sigurdson was 6-3 in the playoffs and helped the Lumberjacks to the Fraser Cup Championship where they fell to the Rochester Grizzlies.

Sigurdson is the second Steel netminder to earn Goaltender of the Week honors this season. Louka Cloutier earned the weekly award on Jan. 29 following a pair of wins that saw him post a 2.00 GAA and .937 save percentage.
