STEEL FALL 4-2 TO MADISON IN TEDDY BEAR TOSS GAME SATURDAY

Harvey scores Teddy Bear Toss goal; Celebrini adds goal

GENEVA, ILLINOIS— The Chicago Steel (21-9-1-1; 44 pts) fell 4-2 to the Madison Capitols (8-22-1-1; 19 pts) Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

Former Steel forward Jack Brandt registered his first USHL goal in his first game against his former team, a goal which broke a 1-1 third period tie.  Madison would add two more goals in the frame, holding off a Chicago rally to earn the victory and split the weekend series.

Jack Harvey scored the goal to send 459 teddy bears onto the ice.  All teddy bears will be donated to Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Wheaton Fire Station 38.

Although Madison's penalty kill sits at the bottom of the USHL standings, it repeatedly shut down the Steel's highly successful power play this weekend.  The Steel were awarded two power play opportunities in the first period including a five minute major penalty against Madison just 29 seconds into the game, but Chicago was unable to capitalize.

Madison got on the scoresheet first with a shorthanded goal late in the first period.  Following a turnover behind the goal line, Matt McGroarty gained possession behind the net, carrying the puck and shoveling it past Steel goaltender Miles Roberts' right skate on a wraparound goal.

Shortly after the Madison goal, another turnover led to a dangerous scoring opportunity for the Capitols.  Max Nagel intercepted the puck at the top of the defensive zone and faced off against Roberts one-on-one.  Roberts stood strong and made a save with his right skate.

After the high-powered Steel offense was stifled for the game's first 34 minutes, it was the team's leading scorer who tied the game and sent the teddy bears onto the ice.

Following a battle along the boards in the Steel defensive zone, Macklin Celebrini wrangled the loose puck at the top of the offensive zone and connected with Michael Emerson crashing the net. Emerson's one-timer wrung off the post drawing Madison goaltender Rastislav Elias out of the net.  Harvey quickly gathered the puck and scored on the open net, sending a barrage of teddy bears soaring over the glass.

As play resumed, Roberts was peppered with shots but held his own, saving all 14 shots faced in the middle frame.

Under two minutes into the third period, former Steel forward Jack Brandt took the lead for Madison.  Brandt registered his first USHL goal in a diving effort to the right of Roberts.  Brady Yakesh calmed the puck on the far side of the blue line, before passing to Trey Ausmus on the other side of point.  Ausmus's shot bounced off Roberts, with Brandt in front to collect the rebound and wrap the puck behind Roberts to give Madison a 2-1 lead.
Less than two minutes later, the Capitols increased their lead with a power play goal.  Jack Musa found Nick Wallace at the point, who faked right to shake off his defender and launched a shot that traveled through traffic past Roberts' glove side.

With less than three minutes left in regulation, the Steel cut the lead to 3-2.  Jayden Perron outmuscled the Madison defender to gain possession of the puck in the Steel offensive zone.  From his knees, Perron passed to Celebrini between the circles.  In an impressive display of skill, Celebrini dangled in front of Elias before finishing for the goal.

In an attempt to tie the game, the Steel pulled Roberts for an extra attacker, and after several near misses, Jack Musa topped off the win with an empty net goal.

Steel goaltender Miles Roberts, appearing in his second game of the season, stopped 29 of 32 shots.
