STEEL CLOSE OUT 2022 WITH A ROAD DEFEAT IN GREEN BAY SATURDAY

Emerson scores 17th of season; Moldenhauer extends point streak to eight

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN— Green Bay scored the first three goals of the game and goaltender Kristoffer Eberly stopped 28 shots as the Gamblers (15-9-1-1; 32 pts) defeated the Chicago Steel (19-7-1-1; 40 pts) 3-1 Saturday night at Resch Center.

Michael Emerson scored the lone goal of the game for Chicago as the teams split a weekend home-and-home series.

The Gambers scored the first goal of the game just over three minutes in.

After a Steel turnover at their own blue line led to a three-on-one for Green Bay, Jimmy Clark drove down the slot and dished a puck to his right where Peter Kremer beat Steel goaltender Christian Manz with a low one-timer.

Green Bay goalie Kristoffer Eberly kept the game 1-0 in favor of his team when he dove towards his net to keep a deflected Chris Able shot from sneaking across the goal line, stopping the puck just before it crossed.

The Gamblers added to their lead with a goal in the last thirty seonds of the first period.

Green Bay defenseman Michael DeAngelo controlled the puck in the right corner and made a cross-ice pass to his defensive partner Jacob Martin at the left point.  Martin calmly eluded a Steel defenseman, circling to the front of the net and beating Manz with a wrist shot stick side.  Green Bay carried the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Steel were unable to solve Eberly in the second period despite several strong chances in the back half of the frame, including the best opportunity created by Nick Moldenhauer and Michael Emerson.

Moldenhauer led a three-on-one down the left side and tried to feed Mick Thompson in the slot.  Modlenhauer's pass was deflected and ended up on the stick of Emerson at the right side of the net.  Emerson tried to pass it across the blue paint behind Eberly, but Moldenhauer was unable to get a clean stick on the puck which bounded off the left post and stayed out of the cage.

With just over three minutes remaining in the period, Green Bay took advantage of a Steel turnover to extend its lead.  Steel goaltender Christian Manz went behind his net to cut off a Green Bay entry, but his pass to the left boards ended up on the stick of DeAngelo whose quick slapshot gave Green Bay a 3-0 lead.

The Steel were finally able to break through in the third period following an outstanding shift by Moldenhauer, Thompson and Emerson.
After fancy stickwork by Chris Able at the top of the Steel zone, the defenseman dished the puck to the left dot where Moldenhauer was stationed.  Moldenhauer shielded his body from a pair of Green Bay defenders and made a strong move the net, dishing the puck a the last moment with a backhand pass to Emerson for a tap-in goal, cutting the lead to 3-1.

The goal was Emerson's 17th of the season and his third of the weekend.  Moldenhauer's assist extended his point streak to eight games.

The Steel emptied their net in favor of an extra attacker with 1:50 to play, and despite a strong chance by Macklin Celebrini, the Gamblers held off the late Steel push.

Chicago's league-leading power play never got a chance in the game, as there was only one infraction whistled in the contest, a minor penalty against the Steel late in the second period.
