Men's Ice Hockey Chicago Steel

HARVEY SCORES TWICE AS STEEL TOP GAMBLERS 6-3

Emerson adds a goal and an assist; Manz stops 28 in Friday night victory

GENEVA, ILLINOIS —Jack Harvey scored a pair of goals and Michael Emerson added a goal and an assist as the Chicago Steel (8-4-0-0; 16 pts.) topped the Green Bay Gamblers (5-5-1-0; 11 pts.) 6-3 in a complete effort Friday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva.

Christian Manz was strong between the pipes, stopping 28 shots to earn his fifth victory of the season.  It was Chicago's second victory over the Gamblers in six days, outscoring Green Bay 13-4 in the two games.

Fans were treated to a wildly entertaining first period.

After Chicago was called for a trip just 1:27 into play, Green Bay's Matt DiMarsico, stationed in the middle of the slot, took a pass from the goal line from teammate Nicholas VanTrassell and unleashed a one-timer past Chicago goalie Christian Manz to give the Gamblers an early 1-0 lead.

Green Bay continued to apply pressure, including a partial breakaway that Manz was able to turn away, but in the process, a hooking penalty put the Steel shorthanded.   Just over a minute later, Chicago's third penalty of the period put Green Bay on a 5-on-3 power play.

As Green Bay attempted to extend its lead on the two-man advantage, Jack Harvey intercepted a cross ice pass in the defensive zone and raced up ice, creating a 2-on-1 for the Steel with teammate Michael Emerson.  After a give-and-go, Harvey backhanded the return pass from Emerson past Green Bay goalie Peyton Grainer for the shorthanded tally to tie the score 1-1.

A Green Bay penalty put Chicago on the man advantage several minutes later, and just six seconds into the power play, Jayden Perron ripped a shot past Grainer for his 7th goal of the season and a 2-1 Steel lead.  After Nick Moldenhauer won the draw, Anthony Dowd sent a pass to Perron near the right faceoff dot to set up the tally.

Late in the period, the Steel found themselves on another power play and once again struck quickly.  Michael Emerson redirected a pass to the left point where Cameron Johnson was stationed.  Johnson whipped a pass to the point for Jake Livanavage who unleashed a low shot on goal that beat Grainer to give Chicago a 3-1 lead.

In the second period, Harvey tallied his second of the night.  After a quick transition off a Hunter Hady pass, Harvey found room high in the offensive zone, skating from right to left before snapping a writer past the glove of Grainer to extend the Chicago lead to 4-1.  Harvey (8G, 8A) has three multi-goal games this season.

With just under four minutes remaining in the second, the Steel extended their lead with a great effort by Emerson.  After briefly losing a puck battle in the left corner of the offensive zone, Emerson picked the pocket of Green Bay's Jason Shaugabay and stickhandled to the front of the net where he beat Grainger five-hole for a 5-1 Steel advantage.

In the third, minutes after Christian Manz made a save to deny a breakaway from Green Bay's Raimonds Vitolins, the Steel had a strong offensive-zone possession which ended up in a tally.

After sustained puck possession, Nolan Joyce fed Chris Able at the point who sent a low shot on net.  Grainer was unable to squeeze it, as Mick Thompson found the loose puck on the doorstep behind the goalie for an easy tap-in to give Chicago a 6-1 lead.

The Gamblers added two late goals from Barrett Hall and later Jimmy Clark to round out the scoring.
