Steel Defeat Gamblers 2-1

Men's Ice Hockey Chicago Steel

STEEL CAPTURE HARD-FOUGHT VICTORY OVER GAMBLERS

Celebrini and Harvey score; Stark makes 30 saves in 2-1 win

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN – Macklin Celebrini scored a power play goal with 5:21 remaining in the third period to snap a 1-1 tie and Jack Stark stopped 30 of 31 Green Bay shots as the Chicago Steel (12-5-1-1; 26 pts.) defeated the Green Bay Gamblers (10-7-1-0; 21 pts.) 2-1 Saturday night at Resch Center.

A scoreless game heading to the third, Green Bay took a brief 1-0 lead before goals from Jack Harvey and Celebrini lifted Chicago to victory and secured three out of a possible four points in a pair of road games this weekend.

Green Bay goalie Kristoffer Eberly entered Saturday night's game as the league leader in wins and saves.  At the other end, Steel goalie Jack Stark was making his first start since a 30-save effort in a 2-1 overtime win over Youngstown on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Both netminders were sharp early, with Stark stopping ten first period Green Bay shots and Eberly halting all six he faced.

Things opened up in the second period with Green Bay registering several strong scoring chances in the first half of the period, with Start denying each opportunity.

Chicago found its footing with sustained offensive pressure midway through the frame with Celebrini whizzing a backhander just wide of a partially empty Green Bay cage.

On the ensuing Green Bay shift, the Gamblers forced a turnover at the Steel blue line which set up a two-on-one for Green Bay's Mykhailo Danylov and Nicholas Vantassall.  After a give and go, Vantassall was robbed by Stark with the glove to keep the game scoreless.

Tensions of a tight game boiled over with 6:41 left in the second period as Jacob Martin ignited a fight with Steel defenseman Jake Livanavage, leading to an instigator penalty and game misconduct for Martin.

With Chicago on the resulting power play, a quick transition by the Gamblers led to a shorthanded chance for James Doerr, but Stark was up to the task.

The game remained even into the third period before the Gamblers struck on the power play.  Green Bay forwards Jayden Davis, Jimmy Clark and Barrett Hall completed a pretty passing play which ended up on the stick of Hall for his sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 Green Bay lead with 14:29 left.

Nearly three minutes later, Jack Harvey tied the game.  From his blue line, Steel defenseman Chris Able sent a pass to Jayden Perron along the left boards near center ice.  Perron directed a pass towards Harvey who was covered by Gamblers defenseman Olivier Chessler.

With a quick lift of Chessler's stick, Harvey found himself alone with the puck having created a clear path to the Green Bay net where he calmly beat Eberly between the pads for his league-leading 16th goal of the season.

A Green Bay tripping penalty sent Chicago to the man advantage with seven minutes remaining in regulation.

With the power play winding down, Harvey quickly dished a no-look pass from the right faceoff dot to Celebrini in the middle of the ice.  Celabrini took the pass and rifled a shot over the right shoulder of Eberly for his 11th goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.

Green Bay emptied its net following a timeout with 2:24 remaining, but Chicago's forecheck and solid effort in its own zone was enough to finish off the road victory.

Stark improved his record between the Steel pipes to 5-1-0-0 in six starts, all of which featured 30 or more saves by the Yale University commit.
