Steel Fall to Dubuque in OT 4 - 3

Men's Ice Hockey Chicago Steel

STEEL FALL TO DUBUQUE 4-3 IN OVERTIME FRIDAY

Celebrini, Perron and Major tally goals for Chicago

DUBUQUE, IOWA –For the fifth straight Steel game, it took more than 60 minutes to decide a winner as the Chicago Steel (11-5-1-1; 24 pts.) fell in overtime to the Dubuque Fighting Saints (8-4-1-1; 16 pts.) 4-3 Friday night at Dubuque Ice Arena.

James Reeder scored the game winner for the home team 2:33 into the extra session.  Chicago outshot Dubuque 32-20 and received goals from Macklin Celebrini, Jayden Perron and Charlie Major.

Fighting Saints goaltender Paxton Geisel stopped 29 of 32 shots to earn the victory including several key saves in the third period.

Max Montes opened the scoring for Dubuque on the power play.  After extended time in the offensive zone, Fighting Saints forward Ryan St. Louis controlled the puck at the right circle and dished the puck down low to teammate Montes to the right of Steel goaltender Christian Manz.  Montes walked in on Manz across the crease and slid the puck past Manz for his sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 Dubuque lead.

Just over three minutes later, the Fighting Saints won a puck battle behind the Steel net.  Jake Sondreal, stationed between two Steel defenders, forced the puck free to teammate Shawn O'Donnell, waiting on the doorstep.  O'Donnell shoveled a pass across the cage to Noah Powell for a tap-in goal to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the second period, Macklin Celebrini brought the Steel to within 2-1 with the tenth goal of his rookie season.  After an initial 3-on-2 Steel rush was broken up, Celebrini ended up with the puck on the right half boards.  The dynamic forward swooped towards the net unguarded and let go a low wrist shot that beat Geisel just inside the left post.

The Steel earned the equalizer while on the powerplay later in the period.  After Geisel made a terrific save to rob Harvey on a 2-on-0 rush, Saints defenseman William Staring was called for roughing, putting Chicago on its second powerplay of the night.

With Chicago controlling the puck in the offensive zone, Anthony Dowd found Perron at the right circle.  Perron found space inside the circle as he toe-dragged and beat Geisel inside the left post, just like his teammate Celebrini had done five minutes earlier.

Ryan St. Louis gave Dubuque the lead six minutes into the third period.  After Geisel stopped Jayden Perron and Cameron Johnson from point-blank range, St. Louis forced a turnover at the Chicago blue line and sprinted up ice.  The Fighting Saints leading scorer sent a low wrister on net that Manz got a piece of, but the puck trickled over the goal line for a 3-2 Fighting Saints lead.

The Steel tied the game with 8:25 remaining in regulation.  A strong Steel forecheck resulted in Chris Delaney controlling the puck behind the net.  Delaney fed Charlie Major just inside the right dot for a one-time shot that clanked in off the left post.  The goal was Major's second of the season.

After the teams traded chances over the final few minutes of regulation, the game went to overtime.

Chicago had the better of the chances for the first two minutes of the extra session until James Reeder forced a Steel turnover at the Dubuque blue line.  A quick pass by Staring freed Oliver Moberg to start a 2-on-1 rush up ice.  Moberg calmly waited for Reeder to join the play, then dished the puck to him on the left side.  With Manz sliding to his right, Reeder sent a wrist shot past Manz' left shoulder and into the cage for the game-winning goal.
