STEEL SWEEP PHANTOMS IN SECOND STRAIGHT OT THRILLER

Emerson nets game-winner; Stark stops 30 to backstop victory

GENEVA, ILLINOIS –In another thrilling contest, the Chicago Steel (11-5-0-1; 23 pts.) defeated the Youngstown Phantoms (5-5-3-1; 14 pts.) 2-1 in overtime Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena.  The Steel swept the weekend series from the Phantoms, the first time they have won back-to-back games in a weekend since starting the season with a pair of wins at the Dick's Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic in Pennsylvania.

Michael Emerson scored the game-winning goal for Chicago 2:00 into the extra session off a beautiful feed from teammate Jake Livanavage, Friday night's overtime hero.

Jack Stark stopped 30 of 31 Youngstown shots in his first game action in over a month to earn his fourth victory of the season.

For the first time since September, the Steel swept back-to-back weekend games.

A night after Chicago came out with the early jump, on this night it was Youngstown which served as the aggressor early on.  The Phantoms registered the game's first four shots, including the first goal of the night.

After putting pressure on the Steel cage, Tyler Catalano, stationed in the slot, redirected a Chase Pietila shot from the right point into the back of the net to put the Phantoms ahead 1-0.

The Steel tied the game at 1-1 when Jayden Perron scored his 8th goal of the season.  Macklin Celebrini caught a pass from Michael Emerson just inside the left faceoff circle and slid a pass to a cutting Perron who beat Phantoms goalie Jacob Fowler through the five-hole.

With the assist, Emerson extended his point streak to six games.

In the second, Youngstown continued to test Steel netminder Jack Stark, appearing in his first game since October 14 due to an upper body injury.  Stark was up to the task, setting aside 14 shots while gaining confidence as the period wore on.

The Steel were unsuccessful on a pair of power play chances in the second, and Youngstown failed to score on its on first power play opportunity of the night which came in the back half of the period and included Stark getting help from his crossbar and later turning aside Matthew Perkins on the doorstep with his blocker.

The teams traded chances in the third period with Stark making an outstanding save early, reaching back with his stick while sprawled in the crease to stop the go-ahead goal, and Emerson ringing the puck off the crossbar behind Fowler.

For the second straight night, the game went to overtime.  Kenta Isogai began the 3-on-3 session ringing a shot wide of Stark. After the teams traded possessions, Jack Harvey made a strong defensive play in the Steel zone to spring Jake Livanavage and Michael Emerson on a 2-on-1 chance up ice.

Livanavage took the puck down the left side and, after gaining the Youngstown blue line and heading towards the net, he beautifully eluded a Phantoms defender by pulling the puck back and dishing it to his right for Emerson to deposit it past Fowler for the game-winner.
