STEEL RALLY FOR 6-5 SHOOTOUT WIN AGAINST MADISON
Hady nets game-winner in 11th shootout round; Hagens registers his first USHL goal; Emerson, Harvey each add pair
MIDDLETON, WISCONSIN – After rallying from a two-goal deficit late in the third period and then relinquishing a one-goal lead with six seconds remaining, the Chicago Steel (9-5-0-0, 18 pts.) scored an 11th round shootout victory, capping a wild 6-5 win over the Madison Capitols (5-6-0-1, 11 pts.) Friday night at Bob Suter Capitol Ice Arena in Wisconsin.
Steel goaltender Christian Manz made 30 saves and helped secure the shootout victory with an incredible 10 of 11 saves in the lengthy shootout.
Michael Hagens netted his first USHL goal early in the third period to start a four-goal frame for Chicago. The Steel twice needed to come back from two-goal deficits in the period.
After a scoreless first half of the first period, Jack Harvey opened scoring with a goal between Madison goaltender Rastislav Elias' legs on a breakaway to give the Steel a 1-0 lead. Harvey's unassisted goal would be his first of the night.
The Capitols responded with three second period goals from Jonah Aegerter, Jan Olenginski and Finn Brink to take a 3-1 lead.
At the other end of the ice, Elias was strong in net, denying numerous Chicago chances to keep the Steel off the scoreboard for the middle twenty minutes.
Less than four minutes into the third period, however, Hagens scored his first USHL goal. After Nick Moldenhauer forced a turnover and got the puck to Mick Thompson, Thompson who made a cross ice pass to a wide open Hagens who beat Elias to make the score 3-2.
About six minutes later, Madison padded its lead as former Steel forward Quinn Finley scored for the Capitols increasing the lead to 4-2.
On the power play with 7:15 left in the game, Jack Harvey struck again with a blast from the top of the offensive zone to cut the lead to 4-3.
The goal marked Harvey's fourth multi-point game in a row and his third straight two-goal game. Harvey leads the USHL with 22 points (14G, 8A).
Two minutes later, reigning USHL Forward of the Week, Michael Emerson carried the puck through pressure and found space to score a shorthanded goal and to tie the game at 4-4.
Emerson struck once again, this time on the power play with under four minutes remaining. After Jack Harvey's initial shot hit the crossbar, Emerson was there to pounce on the rebound and score his ninth goal of the season to give Chicago a 5-4 lead.
With time winding down in regulation, a late Madison rush created a 2-on-1 chance and Max Nagel scored with just 6.6 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
After a 3-on-3 overtime which featured a pair of great saves by Manz, the game proceeded to a shootout.
Both goalies kept the scoresheet clean through nine rounds before Grayden Slipec scored for Chicago in the tenth, only to be matched by Madison's Connor Schneider.
In the 11th, the game winner came from Hunter Hady. Hady rushed in with a fake shot and went forehand-backhand to beat Elias. Manz then stopped Trey Ausmus and celebrated his sixth victory of the season with his teammates.
