Storm Score Twice in the Third to Down Chicago

Rooney, Kudrick record Steel goals

GENEVA, IL — Chicago held a one-goal lead heading to the third period, but the Tri-City Storm (21-19-3-2, 47 pts.) scored 26 seconds into the third and again later in the frame to top the Steel (20-18-5-2, 47 pts.) 3-2 Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

The Steel scored on one of their two power plays and outshot Tri-City while limiting them to six third-period shots. The Steel had several chances in the final minute, but could not find the equalizer.

Ryland Rooney scored his 11th goal early in the second period, and Brady Kudrick scored his 12th goal later in the frame.

Louis-Felix Charrois stopped 24 of 27 shots in defeat.

Wyatt Herres, who returned to the Steel lineup after missing the last ten games due to injury, picked up where he left off early with his offensive presence when he released a point shot that was deflected on goal by Patrick Tolan. Tri-City goaltender Michal Pradel's good positioning kept the puck out.

Chicago's forecheck was steady for the majority of the opening half of the first period, limiting Tri-City to just two shots in the first seven minutes.

Later, Connor Brown got through the Steel defense and had an open lane to the net, but lost control of the puck as he worked to the crease.

He had another chance shortly after on a one-timer, but Charrois shut it down.

The Steel were penalized just before the ten-minute mark of the first frame, giving Tri-City the game's first power play.

After killing the penalty, Adyn Merrick had a good chance on a broken play when he tried to funnel a backdoor pass that was broken up, and had another opportunity shortly after but he failed to corral the puck.

The Storm pushed back when Cade Kozak had a wraparound chance and appeared to have the left side open, but Charrois and the Steel defense came to the rescue to seal the post.

Tri-City continued its push when Paul Bloomer had a two-on-one, but Luke Goukler made a great effort to backcheck and negate the chance.

Late in the period, Merrick stayed on the trail and had space at the left wing, wristing a shot from the hashmarks, but Pradel absorbed the chance.

With under a minute left in the period, Ashton Dahms rifled a shot that bounced off the left post directly to Cam Springer, but Charrois stretched to his right and made a sensational pad stop.

Tri-City got the opening goal one minute into the second frame when Mason Jenson throttled a centering feed to Bode Laylin who tipped it past Charrois to make it 1-0 Storm.

Chicago responded just 1:29 later when Goukler nudged a cross-ice feed to Rooney, who lifted a nifty backhand over Predal to tie it 1-1.

The Steel went to the power play twice in the middle frame and broke through on their second chance against the league's best penalty kill unit.

Just over one minute into the power play, Benson Grande tapped a pass to Kudrick, who fired past Pradel to give Chicago a 2-1 lead.

Shots favored Tri-City 22-17 heading to the third period.

Just 26 seconds into the third period, Laylin tallied his second goal of the game on a heavy wrist shot from the right point to tie the game at 2-2.

Chicago put forth a strong push four minutes into the third frame with a ruthless forecheck for over a minute. Tri-City eventually cleared, but Merrick carried in on a three-on-two and rifled a shot from the right circle that was denied by Pradel.

The Storm took the lead at 11:59 when Luca Jarvis sped into the attacking zone to create an odd-man rush before tucking a shot past Charrois to give Tri-City a 3-2 lead.

It remained a one-goal deficit for Chicago late in the third, forcing the Steel to pull Charrois for an extra attacker with 2:08 left.

The Steel nearly tied the game with 22 seconds left on a mad dash around the crease, but Pradel somehow sealed the right post while on his stomach.

With under 15 seconds remaining, Crowder skated the length of the ice with the puck and coasted down the right side before peppering a shot-pass off the pad of Pradel, creating a rebound opportunity in the crease, but the Storm netminder got the cover to end Chicago's final threat of the night.
