Steel Earn Point in OT Loss to Waterloo

Steel overcome two-goal deficit; Wilmott scores in third period to force overtime

WATERLOO, IA — In a game they never led, the Steel (10-17-2-2, 24 pts.) went stride-for-stride with Waterloo and forced overtime thanks to an early goal in the third period from Ben Wilmott before falling to the Black Hawks (18-12-0-0, 36 pts.) 5-4 in overtime at Young Arena Saturday night.

Waterloo forward Jakub Altrichter scored 55 seconds into the extra session to earn the extra standings point for the home team.

Kolin Sisson was the first goal scorer for Chicago in the opening period, followed by Charlie Major tying the team lead for goals with his 14th of the year three minutes later. Joey DelGreco continued to stay hot with a goal in the second period, and Wilmott added the final goal for the Steel in the third, his second of the year, that tied the game and pushed it to overtime.

Steel netminder Louka Cloutier faced 43 shots and made 38 saves in the overtime loss.

The Steel had to fight an uphill battle to start the opening period on Saturday, committing two penalties called in the first three minutes.

Chicago killed the first two power plays with authority, but the Black Hawks managed to open the scoring when Altrichter got on the board at 7:31 of the first period.

Waterloo went on another man advantage just before the halfway point and converted as Myles Hilman found the back of the net to make it a 2-0 Black Hawks lead.

The Steel made quick work in ceasing the Waterloo run, scoring on a dazzling effort after a solid forecheck.

After picking up the puck in the left corner, Ben Yurchuk skated behind the net and, without looking, dropped a perfect no-look pass in the slot to Kolin Sisson who fired into the wide open net.

The goal was Sisson's seventh of the season and Yurchuk's third assist in the last five games.

Chicago didn't stop there, scoring on another great offensive play three minutes later.

Along the left half boards, Joey DelGreco scooped a loose puck and bounded towards the net, drawing in a defender on his back before tossing a pass to Charlie Major at the back door who fired over the glove of Waterloo goaltender Jack Spicer to tie the game at two.

It was Major's 14th goal of the season and DelGreco's 14th assist of the season.

The Black Hawks stayed persistent on the attack after seeing their lead vanish, getting a goal from Myles Hilman whose shot bounced off the left post, off of Cloutier, and over the goal line to give Waterloo its lead back, 3-2.

The shots after the opening 20 minutes favored Waterloo, 17-8.

The home team picked up exactly where it left off as Gavyn Thoreson scored his seventh goal of the season just over two minutes into the second period to bring Waterloo's lead back to two.

Chicago didn't let the quick goal deter them, cutting the deficit to one shortly after the Black Hawks goal.

The Steel worked the puck deep into Waterloo's end in the left corner, where Mick Thompson lobbed a pass to Hudson Gorski at the left point.

Gorski skated right and released a wrist shot through traffic.  DelGreco got a stick on the fluttering puck to deflect it by Spicer and make it a 4-3 game.

The Steel received a power play with just three seconds left in the second period.  Chicago didn't score on the man advantage, but they did get on the board shortly after.

Following another clean zone entry, Sisson received a chip pass from Anthony Cardilli below the icing line, skated behind the net and fed a great pass to Ben Wilmott who was open in front of the net.

Wilmott moved forehand to backhand and lifted a perfect shot under the bar to tie the game at four. It was Wilmott's second goal of the year.

The early goal was the only one scored in the third period, as the game proceeded to overtime, the third consecutive overtime game for the Steel.

Waterloo started overtime with possession and never gave it up, resulting in Altrichter sniping his second goal of the night from the high slot over the glove of Cloutier and bar-down to win the game, 5-4.

The Steel continue their Western Conference swing on Sunday afternoon in Des Moines with a game against the Buccaneers at 3:00 pm.
