Steel Topple Madison with Overtime Victory

Major scores twice as Steel win third overtime game on home ice

GENEVA, IL — In a game that saw three ties en route to overtime, Charlie Major scored less than a minute into the extra frame to give the Chicago Steel (6-12-1-1, 14 pts.) an exciting 4-3 victory over the Madison Capitols (10-6-4-2, 26 pts.) at Fox Valley Ice Arena Saturday night.

Major scored the final two Steel goals in the win, his tenth and eleventh scores this year. Major's goal in the extra session was his third overtime winner this season.  Kolin Sisson opened the scoring on a highlight-reel goal, and Michael Hage sniped home a power play goal.

Steel goaltender Louka Cloutier made 17 saves in his second win of the year.

In the second matchup of the weekend, the Steel found the back of the net first with an incredibly impressive individual effort.

Kolin Sisson received a pass in neutral ice and deked to his right, just inside the blue line, sending a Capitols defender tumbling to the ice, then moved to his backhand around the last defenseman and roofed a wrist shot for an early "Goal of the Week" candidate.

It was Sisson's second of the season and first since Oct. 28.

The Capitols took Chicago's opening goal back four minutes later when Aiden Long capitalized on a Steel turnover and ripped his third score of the season to tie the game.

The Steel outshot the Capitols 13-8 in the opening frame.

Just before the halfway point of the second period, Chicago came within a skate's steel blade of taking the lead when Lukas Sawchyn got an open look with Capitols goaltender Patriks Berzins out of position.  Sawchyn's shot was labeled for the back of the net, but Berzins went close to a full split and kicked the puck out with his skate.

The Steel then went on a heavy cycle in the attacking end, exhausting the Capitols' defense which ultimately led to a Madison penalty and a Steel power play.

The Steel picked up where they left off with pure play in the Madison zone and scored just :15 into the power play.  Michael Hage dragged and fired his seventh goal of the year with a wrist shot from the right circle to put Chicago ahead 2-1. It was Hage's first power play goal of the season.

The game of cat and mouse continued as Austin Burnevik scored his third goal of the weekend. Burnevik showed great patience on a 2-on-1, faking a shot to drop Steel netminder Louka Cloutier before deking his way in and roofing a backhand to tie the game at two.

The Steel outshot Madison in consecutive periods, with shots favoring Chicago 25 to 15 through two periods.

Chicago's offense remained prominent, and 5:11 into the third frame, a point shot from Chris Able was deflected by Charlie Major past Berzins to put the Steel back in front.

Major has scored in all four games this season against Madison.

The Steel appeared to get the first two-goal lead of the game after Michael Hagens pounced on a Hunter Hady rebound, but the officials waved the goal off immediately after a goaltender interference ruling.

With one power play goal under its belt, the Steel moved into prime positioning with another man advantage in the late stages of the third, already up a goal.

A minute and a half after going to the power play, it was the Capitols who jumped on the board with a shorthanded goal from James Hong to tie the game at three, the third tie of the night.

Major took a stick to the chin with just over a minute left in regulation to draw a four-minute power play. Chicago could not score on the advantage in regulation, which took the game to overtime. Five of Chicago's last six home games have gone to overtime.

Only :58 into the extra session, while still on the power play, Major turned up ice from the blue line, dragged to change the angle, and fired around a defender to end the game and give the Steel a 4-3 win.
