Three-Goal Third Not Enough Against Musketeers

Sisson and Cardilli score first USHL goals as comeback effort falls short

SIOUX CITY, IA — Despite a three-goal outburst in the third period to draw within two goals, the Chicago Steel (1-7-1-0, 3 pts.) fell 6-3 Saturday night as the Sioux City Musketeers (7-3-3-0) swept the weekend series at the Tyson Events Center.

Kolin Sisson and Anthony Cardilli scored for the first time in their USHL careers, and Ben Yurchuk added his second goal of the weekend for the Steel. Christian Manz stopped 20 of 25 shots in defeat.

Like they did on Friday night, the Musketeers got on the board first on Saturday shortly after the ten-minute mark of the opening frame.

The Steel were unable to clear their defensive zone, leading to Musketeers forward Kaden Shahan flying in, snagging the free puck and backhanding home his eighth goal of the year.

Down 1-0, Joey DelGreco created the Steel's best chance late in the first and nearly tied the game.

After a great defensive play at the blue line to dislodge the puck, DelGreco sprung himself on a breakaway, but was shut down by Musketeers goaltender Jakub Krbecek.

Chicago took its first penalty of the game five minutes into the second period, and the Musketeers high-powered power play unit made it hurt.

One minute into the advantage, Sam Court fired a cross-ice pass to Shahan who fired his second goal of the night as it just squeaked past the right pad of Steel goaltender Christian Manz.

The Musketeers' onslaught continued later in the frame when Makaio Van Tassel scored his first career USHL goal, making it 3-0 Sioux City.

With 2:32 left in the period, the Musketeers went to the power play for the second time, and again, the home team converted.

The goal was created after Steel defenseman Hudson Gorski got loose on a shorthanded 2-on-1 on the left wing. Gorski fired a well-placed wrist shot and the puck deflected off the glove of Krbecek and trickled towards the goal line, narrowly staying out.

The Musketeers picked up the loose puck and started the other way with numbers, where Brian Nicholas ripped a shot that Manz appeared to have secured, but the puck evaded his grasp, giving Dylan Godbout the chance to shovel it home and extend Sioux City's lead to 4-0.

In a deep hole, Chicago managed to break the shutout bid early in the third.

Out of a broken play in neutral ice, Hans-Martin Ulvebne found the puck in the slot and carried in with Kolin Sisson who received the pass from his linemate and fired in his first career USHL goal.

The Musketeers offered up a response at 9:02 of the third with one of the wackier goals you'll ever see.

While on the power play, Hagen Burrows set up behind the Steel net and made what appeared to be a hard centering pass, but the puck trampolined off of the shin pad of Gorski and between the legs of Manz for a fluky goal for Sioux City.

The third power play goal allowed by Chicago ignited a pair of timely responses from the Steel to add a level of intrigue to Saturday night's game.

1:29 after the power play goal, Ben Yurchuk displayed some smooth stick handling prowess and dangled Krbecek for his second goal in as many games to bring the Steel within three, 5-2.

Five minutes later, Anthony Cardilli took a page out of Yurchuk's book and made a great move on a breakaway, deking to his backhand and scooping the puck just past Krbecek for his first USHL goal to make it 5-3.

The Musketeers tightened down and kept the Steel off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, adding an empty net goal to win 6-3 and sweep the weekend series.

Four Steel skaters scored their first USHL goals in the two-game weekend (Ulvebne, Yurchuk, Sisson, Cardilli).
