Chicago Looking To Gain Edge
Bensenville, IL (January 16th, 2010) -
The
Chicago Steel, looking to remain in the playoff hunt,
spent the weekend in Iowa taking on Sioux City and Cedar
Rapids in a Friday Saturday back-to-back.
The Steel (13-16-5) came into Friday’s game against the
Musketeers with stiff competition for the fourth and
final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with
Chicago, along with Waterloo and Youngstown all within
four points of each other.
In the 1st period Chicago’s Kevin Lind (Notre
Dame) found Alex Carpenter for the lone goal for either
side with 17:36 gone by in the period.
Chicago’s Connor Wilson matched Sioux City’s Matt Skoff
throughout the 2nd period with neither goalie
giving up a goal.
In the 3rd, Alex Krushelnyski (Colorado
College) added what seemed like an insurance goal to put
Chicago up 2-0 but Sioux City’s Billy Latta notched two
goals of his own to force overtime.
In the extra frame Chicago managed three shots on goal
but couldn’t find the back of the net. Wilson’s strong
performance (30/32) was spoiled in the shootout when
Sioux City ground out two goals to which Chicago
couldn’t answer.
Following the 3-2 loss the night before, Chicago
traveled to the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena for a rematch
with the RoughRiders. Chicago’s last visit to Cedar
Rapids on Halloween ended in a 6-5 victory for the
Steel.
Chicago’s Mark Anthoine (Maine) scored his 20th
goal to tie the game at 1-1 with just under seven
minutes played in the first. That would be all the Steel
would be able to muster on that night.
Cedar Rapids scored four goals in the first and one
apiece in the next two periods to finish with a 6-1
advantage over the Steel.
Chicago returns home to the Edge Ice Arena to host the
Des Moines Buccaneers and the Sioux City Musketeers this
Friday and Saturday.
